Frequently Asked Questions

How does the oyster farm tour in Ribeirão da Ilha work?

The experience includes a visit to a marine farm in Ribeirão da Ilha, with a boat ride to the farming area. During the activity, we get an up-close look at how oyster farming works in Florianópolis, from cultivation in the sea to the steps leading up to consumption. The visit to the marine farm lasts approximately 2 hours and includes an oyster tasting.

Is the activity done by boat?

Part of it is. We first learn about the oyster production process on land. Then, we take a boat trip to the oyster farm, which lasts approximately 30 minutes. This is where the oyster tasting takes place, right in the farming area. In total, the oyster farming visit lasts about 2 hours.

What makes this experience different from simply eating oysters at a restaurant?

Here, the oyster is the starting point for understanding the region. Before the tasting, we tour the marine farm, see how oyster farming works, and discuss the connection between this production and Florianópolis. Afterward, the experience continues with a walk through the Historic District, linking production, culture, landscape, and local history.

What is Ribeirão da Ilha and why is it worth visiting?

Ribeirão da Ilha is one of Florianópolis’ most traditional communities, known for its Azorean heritage, well-preserved historic district and strong connection with the sea and oyster farming. Visiting Ribeirão da Ilha offers a deeper understanding of the history, culture and traditional ways of life of Santa Catarina Island. In our experience, the visit to the oyster farm is combined with a walk through the Historic Center, connecting oyster production with the territory where this activity developed.
